Solitary old Miss Brady lives on a
barge, with a badger. She doesn't like people much, especially children, and
that includes Helen. But she needs her help, and for Helen, it's better than
staying at home. The effect of this strange friendship are told in the first of
five stories, which concern the relationship between young and old.
