Neil Platten - Taxidermist
- Neil Platten has been a Taxidermist since about 1990. An avid
birdwatcher and wildlife enthusiast, Neil is a licensed taxidermist,
which means that all his preserved birds and animals have died from
natural causes, or were road traffic accident victims.
- Taxidermy, when done well, can be used to provide educational
specimens. These are sometimes used by Badger Groups
when they give talks and lectures to the public or in schools or
colleges.
- Whilst it can be educational and informative to see a well-filmed
video clip of badgers at play, this isn't always the best way to
appreciate a badger in real life. The TV screen may provide
excellent quality imagery, but it can be tricky to appreciate the
true size and scale of a badger, unless you've seen a real one.
- As badgers are mainly nocturnal, and mainly country-based animals,
the use of preserved specimens can show town and city-based children
and adults a badger in the flesh, so that can see the fur, and the
teeth and the claws; and appreciate just what a well-designed animal
the badger really is.
- A well-preserved and well-mounted specimen can last for many
years.
