Charges after badger sett inquiry

Two men have been charged after an investigation into the disruption of a badger sett in Northumberland.

The men were originally arrested in March as part of a joint operation between Northumbria Police, the RSPCA and the Northumberland Wildlife Trust.

Robert McCarthy, 32, of, Cannongate, Alnwick, and Stephen McCarthy, 60, of Stowmarket, Suffolk, are charged with interference with a badger sett.

Both have been bailed to appear before magistrates on 7 August.

A badger sett at Bradford Kairns, near Belford was allegedly disturbed on 13 March.

Under the Protection of Badgers Act 1992, it is a criminal offence to interfere with a sett and the charge carries a maximum prison sentence of six months.
