Charge after badger sett concerns

A
man has been charged in connection with interfering with a badger
sett in Lancashire. Lancashire Constabulary said the 25-year-old was arrested on
farmland in Darwen on Tuesday. He was released on bail and is due to appear before magistrates
in Blackburn on Thursday.
The constabulary's Wildlife Officer, PC Duncan Thomas, made an
appeal last week for members of the public to report any badger
setts that had been disturbed.
In the UK it is an offence to kill, injure or capture a badger,
or to interfere with its sett.
The Protection of Badgers Act 1992 protects badgers and their
setts even when it is not occupied at the time.
The maximum sentence for breaking the act is six months'
imprisonment and a £5,000 fine.
