Concern over badger baiting gangs

15 Feb 2006 - BBC News

Police in Lancashire are concerned about the amount of gangs getting involved in badger baiting.

The activity, which is illegal, involves badgers being caught and then killed by terrier dogs.

The wildlife officer for Lancashire Constabulary, PC Duncan Thomas, said he wants to hear from the public if they see any badger setts being disturbed.

"Over the last 10 days we know of two locations which have been dug into by criminals," he said.

In the UK it is an offence to kill, injure or capture a badger, or to interfere with its sett.

The Protection of Badgers Act 1992 protects badgers and their setts even when it is not occupied at the time.

The maximum sentence for breaking the act is six months' imprisonment and a £5,000 fine.
