Badger setts delay bridge work

2 June 2004 - BBC News

Work to re-open Hutton Moor Bridge in Weston-super-Mare has been delayed because of a badger sett. The bridge was initially shut following damage caused by a burst water main. It was then discovered badgers were living on the south side of the bridge. All repair work was then halted. Ecologists also say nesting birds in the area need to be protected. Wildlife officials will inspect the site in another month before they give it the all clear.

North Somerset Council had been trying to open the bridge but Defra told the authority work could not start until the badgers had left. One-way gates have been installed at the entrance to the sett which will allow the badgers to move without any danger of them returning. The nesting birds will also have to be left undisturbed until the young have fledged and flown the nests. It is estimated the badgers will take about a month to move on, when work will continue.
